Mostly rice bento

I have been packing mostly rice-based bento lately, although there was the occasional sandwich or pasta salad. The good thing about sandwich and pasta salads is that they could be packed in advanced (the night before) so I don't have to get up early in the morning to make them in time for AP to leave for work. That said, preparation time can be minimised by measuring out food, and doing the washing and cutting and marinating the night before so that everything could be cooked or reheated very quickly before being packed into their containers.

Honey roast ham with salad leaves in nuts and oats bread, satsuma slices, strawberries, and a Cadbury's chocolate fudge.

Rice with black sesame seeds, meatballs and stir fried broccoli and red peppers.

Rice with furikake, shogayaki (ginger pork), asparagus and cherry tomatoes.

Coriander rice, chicken teriyaki, and stir fried asparagus and carrots.

Pasta salad with meatballs, basil and honey mustard dressing, edamame and carrots, and strawberries.

Salmon teriyaki, rice with salmon and cod roe furikake, sugar snap peas and cherry tomatoes.

I love these bento lunches. They look so good. I wish my mom would have made them for me when I was growing up instead of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Very nice!

I love these boxes. I would love to have some and start packing our lunches. These $10 lunches a day is killing us!!!

Great pictures!

love the panda fork or toothpick. I normally just put in asian fruit picks (double prong). reminds me of kung fu panda which we saw last week. very cute.

Cute! what's the little panda in the fruit? a toothpick? anyway, it's adorable!

If not that we're working from home, I would love to make bentos like this. So much healthier!

I've decided to start making my own lunch to take into work again, and I came straight here for some inspiration!

Do you reheat your rice dishes or eat them cold?

I just LOVE this concept.

Chuck: My mum didn't pack these lunches for me either! Maybe I will make them for my kids in the future :)

Veggiegirl: Thanks! I don't always do cute (to keep it man-friendly ;) ) but I always try to make them appetising.

Chez us: Eeks, $10 lunches is pretty dire!

Kay: A packed lunch is still better than no lunch (or overpriced lunch!), rice or no rice!

Shop little gifts: Oh yes, I remember using those 2 prong picks when I was a kid! I think my mum still has them, heh.

Becky: Yes, it is a little pick. It came in a set with animal heads, very cute.

Didally: I sometimes pack them even on the random days that I work from home. Saves me time from rooting around the fridge wondering what to eat. Even if you don't put them in a box, just planning ahead for lunch will make a difference in food choices :)

Julia: Good on you! Neither AP or I have a microwave at work so we eat our lunches at room temperature. But you can certainly reheat them in a microwave, as long as your container is microwave-safe.

Trish: Thanks! There's a bit more information on bento in 'Why bento?'.
